Office or Business Locked Out? Here's What to Do (Without Disrupting Operations)

·4 min read·My Locksmith Express Team

Getting locked out of a business is different from a home lockout in a few important ways: more documentation, sometimes multiple stakeholders, often security systems to navigate, and a real cost to every minute the doors aren't open.

Here's how it works for commercial properties.

What we need from you

Before we open your business doors, we need to verify you have authority. Two things on a standard call:

  1. Photo ID matching the name on:
    • The business license, OR
    • The lease, OR
    • LLC / corporation filing showing you as officer/owner
  2. Documentation tying you to that address — utility bill, lease, business filing

For a quick lockout where you're clearly the owner and have a key for other locks at the building (just left them in the office), this is usually fast.

For more complex situations (employee who claims authority, manager without ownership docs, etc.), we may require a call to the owner of record before opening the door. This is for everyone's protection.

Common commercial lockout scenarios

Office building tenant

You're in a multi-tenant office. We open the suite door, not the building lobby. Building lobby is the property manager's responsibility. Bring lease + ID.

Retail storefront

We can open during opening hours (with proof you're the operator) or after-hours (with proof of ownership). Common after-hours call: manager arrived early, employee with the key is late, customers waiting.

Warehouse / industrial

Usually multiple doors. We open the main entry you have authority for. Loading dock and other industrial doors often have different access requirements; let us know on the call.

Property manager / management company

Property managers can authorize lockouts on behalf of owners with proper documentation. We've worked with most major Charlotte property management firms.

Pricing

Scenario Cost
Standard office / retail lockout $95
After-hours emergency (no extra charge in standard area) $95
High-security commercial lock (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock) $125–$175
Lockout + rekey on the spot (post-termination, theft) $95 + $25/cylinder
Lockout + immediate broken lock repair $95 + $60–$150 hardware

No "commercial premium" — the price is based on what work is actually done, not whether it's a business address.

When to also rekey

A few situations where we strongly recommend rekey right after the lockout:

  • Former employee had keys you can't account for
  • After a theft or attempted break-in
  • Lost keys that might still be findable
  • Multiple tenants moved in/out without lock changes

Rekeying 4–6 commercial cylinders takes 30–45 minutes on top of the lockout call. Combined cost typically $200–$300 — way cheaper than a security incident.

What to do BEFORE the next lockout

Three things every business should do:

1. Master key system

If your business has 4+ doors with different keys, get a master key system designed. You hold a master that opens everything; each employee has a sub-key opening only what they need.

  • Cost to design and install: $300–$800 depending on door count
  • Saves money long-term: easy to remove an ex-employee's access without touching other cylinders

2. Backup key with a trusted second party

The single most common cause of office lockouts is "the one person with the key is sick today." Have at least:

  • A spare key with the property owner / manager
  • A backup with a partner or co-owner

Sounds obvious; isn't actually done by most businesses.

3. Access control system (for larger operations)

If you have 10+ employees who need access, traditional keys become a nightmare. Modern access control:

  • Card / fob / phone unlock
  • Real-time log of who came and went when
  • Immediate revocation when someone leaves
  • Time-based restrictions (e.g. weekend access only for managers)

Cost: $1,500–$5,000+ depending on door count. Pays back in saved time and security incidents.
